Why Do You Have Tooth Pain?
Toothaches arise for many reasons, but you’ll need a root canal if you have a deep cavity or a crack that goes through your tooth. These injuries expose the sensitive dentin and pulp underneath your teeth’s enamel. And when the pulp becomes exposed, the bacteria in your mouth infect it, causing damage and inflammation. The pulp often dies, leading to increased cellular activity and pressure.
How Does a Root Canal Help?
During the root canal procedure, your dentist will open the tooth, clean out the pulp, and reshape the canal the pulp previously occupied. He or she will then fill the canal with a rubbery substance, sealing the tooth against further infection and contamination. Once your tooth heals, your dentist will seal it with a cap or crown. The cap looks and functions just like a natural tooth.
What Happens Afterward?
You may experience some soreness after the procedure, but over-the-counter analgesics can easily manage your pain. We’ll also monitor how your tissue heals. In the meantime, brush and floss regularly, pressing gently around the affected tooth. Avoid hard foods until you heal as well.
